Whispers of Love
Love is eternal, always finding a way to stay.
I struggled writing about the meaning and inspiration behind this painting, as it’s not my story.
A few years ago, during a dark period when I felt so alone, a friend reached out and became a lifeline for me. Less than a year later, her daughter, Katie, unexpectedly passed away. At just 18 years old, Katie had recently completed high school and was pursuing some ambitious goals.
We’ve all shed tears, but when there’s a hollow ache, trying to hold onto something that’s no longer there, that’s when you truly weep. Weeping comes from the depths of one’s soul, and I could feel it in her voice.
From what I gathered, Katie was a force of energy, capable of illuminating any room with her spontaneous dances upon entry. I could sense the immense love within her family, and I felt compelled to paint her, though I was apprehensive. I didn’t want to cause further pain or offense.
I spent four straight hours painting, and unlike most of my works, when I set down my brush, I knew I was done. I loved it. When I showed it to my brother, who I trust to be candid with me, he said, “Ooh, I love that.”
It took a few days for me to work up the courage to share it with my friend. I wanted her to understand that I had no intention of causing more pain, and if she didn’t like it or didn’t want me to use it for products or even share it publicly, I would respect her wishes. To my relief, the response from Katie’s family was one of absolute love.
It was a privilege to paint Katie, and an even greater honor to share the overflowing love that poured out onto the canvas.
Katie’s story didn’t end; her light continues to shine on.
When one person is missing the whole world seems empty.
